At Advanced Chiropractic Solutions, our Lincoln chiropractor team meets hundreds of people every year who are temporarily sidelined by whiplash. This common neck injury affects more than just the cervical spine, and it can occur in many situations other than auto accidents. Fortunately, chiropractic care has been shown to be very effective for symptomatic relief of this type of injury and can even drastically reduce a person's risk of any long-term complications.
Imagine slipping and falling on ice, getting rear-ended in your car, colliding with another player out on the sports field, or experiencing any other type of accident causing your head to suddenly stop moving and/or change direction. These "acceleration/deceleration" situations can cause the neck to move in a whip-like fashion and lead to inflammation and damage to several tissues including muscles, tendons, joints, ligaments, nerves, and fascia. This is whiplash.
Note that even relatively minor incidents can lead to its development, since many factors are at play (including the relative health of the person at the time of the incident). Symptoms of whiplash will range from mild to severe, and can include:
Symptoms of a whiplash injury may not show up immediately, and by the time someone notices anything awry, underlying inflammation and tissue damage may have progressed significantly. How is this possible? Fight or flight hormones (like adrenaline) can block pain, and may take days or weeks to return to their normal pre-incident levels.
So, seek help as soon as possible following any sort of trauma—even if you feel "fine"—since early assessment and intervention can prevent a hidden problem from devolving into a more serious issue. Interestingly, a chiropractor can identify signs of whiplash syndrome even if no symptoms are felt.
